Zou triest en misdadig zijn als het waar is, al geloof ik het niet meteen. Mia Farrow geeft wel vaker bizarre steken aan Allen in de media.

20 jaar geleden was het Mia Farrow die met die beschuldigingen kwam, niet de dochter. Kinderen tegen de andere ouder opzetten is ook wel een klassiek gegeven bij vechtscheidingen.

Maar ja, eigenlijk niet interessant om over te speculeren.

Zie hier voor een lang artikel (in het Engels) waarin de feiten onder elkaar gezet worden. Als ik dat zo lees is de meest redelijke conclusie dat Allen waarschijnlijk onschuldig is en dat Dylan haar herinnering van misbruik overgehouden heeft aan een combinatie van mentale problemen en druk van haar moeder.

Weet iemand eigenlijk wat de reden ook al weer was voor het feit dat Allen nooit meer bij de Oscars mocht zijn?

Ik zal eens een aantal stukken uit dat artikel citeren, want niemand gaat dat natuurlijk lezen.

Mia’s allegations of molestation automatically triggered a criminal investigation by the Connecticut State Police, who brought in an investigative team from the Yale-New Haven Hospital, whose six-month long inquiry (which included medical examinations) concluded that Dylan had not been molested.

As to why the team felt the charges didn’t hold water, Leventhal states: “We had two hypotheses: one, that these were statements made by an emotionally disturbed child and then became fixed in her mind. And the other hypothesis was that she was coached or influenced by her mother. We did not come to a firm conclusion. We think that it was probably a combination.”

Leventhal further swears Dylan’s statements at the hospital contradicted each other as well as the story she told on the videotape. “Those were not minor inconsistencies. She told us initially that she hadn’t been touched in the vaginal area, and she then told us that she had, then she told us that she hadn’t.” He also said the child’s accounts had “a rehearsed quality.” At one point, she told him, “I like to cheat on my stories.” The sworn statement further concludes: “Even before the claim of abuse was made last August, the view of Mr. Allen as an evil and awful and terrible man permeated the household. The view that he had molested Soon-Yi and was a potential molester of Dylan permeated the Household ... It’s quite possible - as a matter of fact, we think it’s medically probable - that (Dylan) stuck to that story over time because of the intense relationship she had with her mother.” Leventhal further notes it was “very striking” that each time Dylan spoke of the abuse, she coupled it with “one, her father’s relationship with Soon-Yi, and two, the fact that it was her poor mother, her poor mother,” who had lost a career in Mr. Allen’s films.

Het zou uiteraard best waar kunnen zijn dat hij tóch zijn dochter aangerand heeft (dat weet alleen hij 100% zeker), maar plausibel is dat dus niet gegeven het bewijs dat zes maanden van onderzoek opgeleverd heeft (of beter gezegd: het gebrek aan bewijs, en het tegenbewijs, dat het onderzoek opgeleverd heeft).

Aha. ik dacht dat ie niet welkom was. Ik kan me nog herinneren dat hij bij de Oscars in februari 2002 wél kwam om een tribute te houden voor zijn stad New York na de aanslagen van 9/11. Bedankt!

Het blijft voor mij toch nog een beetje vaag hoor. Al hebben die dochter Dylan en haar moeder wel de schijn tegen begrijp ik...

Nou ja, er zijn wel meer gevallen bekend van mensen die sterke herinneringen hebben van zaken die in werkelijkheid nooit zijn gebeurd - waaronder seksueel misbruik. De menselijke psyche is een maf ding.

Niet dat het niet echt gebeurd kan zijn (dat kan zeker), maar Dylan heeft inderdaad wel de schijn tegen.

Ik kon me toch weer niet inhouden om verder te zoeken, en ondertussen heb ik een aantal artikels gevonden die me doen twijfelen over mijn eerdere oordeel. Ik zal weer een paar stukken citeren:

No. 1: The sexual-abuse allegations did not happen in the midst of a custody battle.

In a June 1993 decision, Acting Justice Elliot Wilk of the New York State Supreme Court found “no credible evidence to support Mr. Allen’s contention that Ms. Farrow coached Dylan or that Ms. Farrow acted upon a desire for revenge against him for seducing Soon-Yi. Mr. Allen’s resort to the stereotypical ‘woman scorned’ defense is an injudicious attempt to divert attention from his failure to act as a responsible parent and adult.”

No. 2: The Connecticut state’s attorney stated that he had probable cause to bring charges against Allen.

No. 3: Dylan Farrow’s testimony was not marred by “inconsistencies.”

No. 4: The unsuspicious nanny was outnumbered. Weide makes a lot out of a deposition by a nanny in Allen’s employ, Monica Thompson, who stated “that she was pressured by Farrow to support the molestation charges,” and that another nanny, Kristie Groteke, had told her that she “did not have Dylan out of her sight for longer than five minutes.” Weide does not mention that Groteke herself testified that she lost track of both Dylan and Allen for 15 to 20 minutes on Aug. 4. Weide does not mention the testimony of babysitter Alison Stickland, who, on Aug. 4, witnessed Allen “kneeling in front of Dylan with his head in her lap” (a detail recounted in Dylan’s open letter). Weide does not mention that Sophie Berge, a tutor, later noticed that Dylan was not wearing underwear.

No. 5: The head of the Yale team investigating the allegations never spoke to Dylan Farrow. (...) Leventhal himself never interviewed Dylan Farrow, nor did he interview her mother or any of the child care workers present at Mia Farrow’s home on Aug. 4, 1992. Dylan was interviewed nine times over a six-month period by Julia Hamilton, who had a Ph.D. in social work, and Jennifer Sawyer, who had a master’s degree in social work. Neither Hamilton nor Sawyer would testify at trial, and Leventhal would only testify via deposition; as Weide points out, they also destroyed their notes on the investigation.

In his 1993 state Supreme Court decision, Wilk found that testimony “proves that Mr. Allen's behavior toward Dylan was grossly inappropriate and that measures must be taken to protect her.” In May 1994, the Appellate Division of the state Supreme Court cited a “clear consensus” among psychiatric experts that Allen’s “interest in Dylan was abnormally intense.”

(…) When we eventually turn away again from the gaudy celebrity pileup, whatever side we have come down upon, if any, it’s important to remember something: research shows that if a child discloses sexual abuse, chances are very, very good that no matter how young he or she is, how angry his or her parent is at the accused, how numb or stiff he or she seems discussing it, how willing she or he is to back off from the claim at any one point, how little physical evidence there is, that child is probably telling the truth.

Several times last summer, while Woody was visiting in Connecticut, Dylan locked herself in the bathroom, refusing to come out for hours. Once, one of the baby-sitters had to use a coat hanger to pick the lock. Dylan often complained of stomachaches and headaches when Woody visited: she would have to lie down. When he left, the symptoms would disappear. At times Dylan became so withdrawn when her father was around that she would not speak normally, but would pretend to be an animal.

3. Allen refused to take a polygraph administered by the Connecticut state police. Instead, he took one from someone hired by his legal team. The Connecticut state police refused to accept the test as evidence.

8. Allen changed his story about the attic where the abuse allegedly took place. First, Allen told investigators he had never been in the attic where the alleged abuse took place. After his hair was found on a painting in the attic, he admitted that he might have stuck his head in once or twice. A top investigator concluded that his account was not credible.

Al die artikelen schetsen juist weer een beeld van Allen als een manipulatieve, egocentrische pedofiel (in dat licht is Manhattan trouwens maar een creepy film!) met een gebrek aan moreel inzicht en Mia als een plichtsbewuste moeder die het goed opvoeden van haar kinderen als haar levensdoel ziet.

Ik ga dus gewoon doen wat ik al meteen had moeten doen: een oordeel afhouden. Ik zal de waarheid nooit te weten komen, dus ik kan mijn tijd wel beter besteden dan aan het ontwikkelen van een oordeel dat altijd speculatief zal blijven. Misschien is Allen een zeer nare man, misschien is Mia een zeer nare vrouw, en misschien zit de waarheid ertussenin. Ik kan het niet weten, dus ik ga er ook niet over oordelen.

Al kan ik niet garanderen dat ik me in zal houden als ik weer een krantenkop zie.

(Edit: ondertussen neig ik toch enigszins naar het "Allen is schuldig"-kamp. De leugens van zijn advocaat, zijn inconsistente verhaal, de maffe anekdotes (waaronder van zijn obsessie met Dylan), het ongeloof-waardige rapport, zijn gebrek aan transparantie ... het doet zijn geloofwaardigheid allemaal geen goed. Maar ja, het blijft slechts een neiging van een leek met onvoldoende kennis van zaken natuurlijk. En morgen kan die neiging weer anders zijn. Het is zo'n mijnenveld van retoriek en leugens.)

En als aanvulling op het bovengenoemde onderzoek dat stelt dat valse aantijgingen aangaande seksueel misbruik zeldzaam zijn zal ik ook nog wat onderzoek over valse herinneringen aanhalen:

Forty years ago, when Loftus came out of graduate school, most people thought of memory as a recording device. It stored imprints of what you had experienced, and you could retrieve these imprints when prompted by questions or images. Loftus began to show that this wasn't true. Questions and images didn't just retrieve memories. They altered them. In fact, they could create memories that were completely unreal.

To measure children's suggestibility, Loftus and a colleague showed them several one-minute films, followed by leading questions. "Did you see a boat?" they asked one child. Afterward, the child remembered "some boats in the water." "Did you see some candles start the fire?" they asked another. "The candle made the fire," the child said later. Other kids, after being asked about bees and bears, recalled bees and bears. None of these things - bees, bears, boats, candles - were in the films.

Loftus began to sketch what she called a "recipe" for planting memories. First, you needed the subject's trust. A therapist had that; so did a family member. Then, by suggesting that the incident might have happened, you planted a seed. The subject would think about it, and the idea, if not the scene, would start to become familiar. The people and places mentioned - , blueberry Icees, the Bremerton K-Mart - would evoke real memories, and these would begin to blur with the suggested scenario. By coaxing the subject to imagine the scene, you could accelerate this confabulation. Gradually, she would add details, seizing authorship of the story and securing its authenticity. The fabrication was out of your hands now. The memory was hers.

She convinced people that they had nearly choked, had caught their parents having sex, or had seen a wounded animal after a bombing. Other researchers planted memories of nearly drowning, being hospitalized overnight, and being attacked by an animal. In one study, Loftus and her collaborators persuaded 18 percent of people that they had probably witnessed demonic possession.

Worse, there was no way to distinguish altered memories from originals. For three decades, Loftus looked for telltale signatures that might help judges and juries. She tried everything: confidence, vividness, emotionality, brain scans. She found some differences on average, but nothing that reliably identified a false memory. In 2009, she and her colleagues concluded that "it might be virtually impossible to tell reliably if a particular memory is true or false without independent corroboration."

En mijn tentatieve inschatting is op dit moment dat Allen het waarschijnlijk gedaan heeft: de anekdotes over zijn (schijnbaar obsessieve) relatie met Dylan zouden verzonnen kunnen zijn, het verdachte, intransparante gedrag van Allen en zijn legale vertegen-woordigers, de gaten in zijn verhaal en het feit dat hij met een "probable cause" aangeklaagd zou zijn ware het niet dat zijn dochter in mentaal opzicht te gebroken was om tegen hem te getuigen zouden allemaal een logische verklaring kunnen hebben, maar het tegendeel (dat hij schuldig is) lijkt me toch iets (iets!) waarschijnlijker. Maar uiteindelijk zijn de enige mensen die de waarheid weten uiteraard Woody en Mia. Één van hen is alles bij elkaar aan het liegen, maar wie dat is, daarover kunnen wij alleen speculeren.

Wat wij uiteraard niet kunnen laten.

Ik ben altijd wel gecharmeerd geweest van Kenneth Branagh in de Woody Allen rol in Celebrity.

Ben verder niet zo uitgesproken dol op hem, maar daar werkte het goed. Beetje het Colin Firth type.

Op dit moment heb ik 6 films van Woods Allen gezien (Annie Hall, Manhattan, Match Point, Midnight in Paris, Vicky Christina Barcelona en To Rome With Love). Hiervan vond ik Annie Hall het beste met 3,5*. De rest scoort allemaal 3*. Ik ben niet echt een groot fan, maar sommige insteken van Woody Alleen liggen me wel. Vooral een aantal scènes in Annie Hall waarbij Woody Allen zich dingen voorstelt in een fantasievorm zijn soms erg herkenbaar. Is er nog een film van deze man die veel van dit soort scènes bevat?
